Window Shade Styles
There are many different styles of window shades for different applications. You could have a shade for privacy in a bathroom or a room-darkening hade in a bedroom. You you get strong after noon sunlight through your family room windows? You may simply want a light diffusing shade. If your only goal is to compliment the decor such as in a formal dining room, classic styles in rich patterns might be what you’re looking for. There are even shades just for skylights. The type of shade you need influences the style of shade best for you. Here is a quick look at some of the different styles available.
Roller Shades
Classic roller window shades are rolled or unrolled to control light and privacy. Traditionally, they pull down from the top, but can also be raised up from the bottom to allow for both privacy and light. Made from a single flat sheet of fabric, options include patterns and images that might not be suitable to other styles of shades. Also available from blackout to filtering.
Dual Shades
Dual shades contain alternating strips of translucent and opaque fabrics that can give you varying degrees of light and privacy. The two layers move independently of each other creating an open and closed effect which allow you to control the amount of light and privacy. As you adjust the light/privacy of the blind, the same mechanism controls the height of the blind, similar to a classic roller blind.
Cellular Shades
Also called Honeycomb shades, the pleated design of this shade creates a hollow space within each pleat. The advantage of these blinds is their energy-saving properties. The hollow pleat helps control heat flow from solar energy to keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Because of their accordion-style design, they are usually a solid color and a lighter fabric.
Roman Shades
As the shade is raised and lowered, the gathered fabric rolls over the section below it resulting in a horizontal fold. Roman shades can be manufactured in a variety of styles that create different gathering and folding patterns for a unique look when raised. These are better suited to large windows and a traditional or classical decor style. Solid fabrics are best for these shades.
Venetian Blinds
Venetian blinds are made with wood or plastic slats hung evenly spaced by strings. The slats can be angled forward or backward for light control and the blind can be raised or lowered for full or semi-privacy. Slats are available in a wide range of plastic colours, wood stains, and wood grain patterns. Operation can include rod and wand pulls or can be motorized with remote control.
Vertical Blinds
Best for large picture windows, patio doors and window walls, vertical blinds use long vertical slats of a broad width that can be angled open or closed for light control and privacy. Verticals can be made with either plastic or fabric slats. Fabric slats are available in a wide range of colours, patterns and textures. Plastic slats can be smooth or textured with a pattern.
